I tested both the Nike Free Everyday and the Nike Free 5.0. First of all, they are very, very different shoes, so I’ll review them separately, and compare them.
Comparison:
The Everyday’s feel pretty similar to normal running shoes. They are much looser and softer than the 5.0’s. The sole is not as flexible, but it is more flexible than your typical running shoe. Overall, I think they would be much easier for most runners to get used to than the 5.0’s. They are more comfortable as far as plushness goes, and an easier transition from normal running shoes.
The Free 5.0’s are very form fitting, almost like a sock with a sole. They are extremely flexible in the sole, and definitely have a different feel from any other running shoe I’ve tried. Nike recommends working up to running in these shoes, and I can see why - they don’t have much support and really do make you feel almost like you are running barefoot. The tightness around the foot is a constant reminder that you are not running barefoot, but as far as the sole is concerned, the analogy is pretty accurate. I felt a lightness and agility that I’ve never felt with any other shoe.
I have been wanting to give the Nike Free line of shoes a try for a long time. I decided to start with the Free Everydays since I had heard they had a bit more cushion and support than a regular Free model. I must say, I am very pleased! The shoe is very light, just around 8.5 ounces in my size. I like the addition of the air zoom unit in the heel which is not in the regular Free models. I think the fit runs a slight bit big. I usually run in a womens size 8 and I feel I have a little extra room in these, but not too much that it is an annoyance. I would recommend these for a neutral runner or someone with very minimal pronation that wants a form fitting, lightweight, breathable training shoe.
