Good Runs Are Part of the Game Too! And March Winner!

Hey!
So, I did my 20 miles on Tuesday. I did the first 7 miles with Roadbunner, then headed off for the last 13 by myself. It was a great run. The weather was absolutely perfect. Sunny and gorgeous. I felt really good, but went very slow so that I didn’t wear myself out. Toward the end it hurt a fair amount and my knees felt like they might pop, but it wasn’t horrendous.

I have 2 more 20+ runs before my marathon and I’m trying to decide what distances I should go for. I’ve pretty much thrown my marathon schedule out the window…I would be doing 19 next week if I were following it.

I’m thinking I’ll do 22 next week and then 24 for my final long run before the marathon. I feel like that is reasonable, but it also seems like more miles than most of the training schedules I’ve seen call for. Any suggestions?

  1. Yeah, my plan (now abandoned by the road side) had miles like that in it. If you know you can handle the distance and abuse, I say go for it

  2. personally i would stick to 22 or less… i don’t really go over 20 ever in training. most training schedules i have seen don’t go over 22.

also i think it’s good to have a down week in between 20 milers. for example, i am doing 20, 17, 20 then taper… but thats just me :)

good luck!!! and awesome job on your 20 miler!!!

  3. Congrats to the shoe winner!

I’ve never done a marathon, but most of what I’ve heard recommends NOT going over 22 miles. I’d trust them. ;-)

  4. I’m never gone over 20 in a training run. I would stay with 22. Justin did a 22 last time around and those few extra miles do take more out of you than you think.

I agree with Aron. I think my plan goes 20 16 20 taper.

Great job on joining the 20 mile club though!

  5. Nice job on the 20. I don’t think you need to go all the way up to 24 miles, 20 or 22 max will be just fine. It is totally up to you. Good luck!!

  6. Yay Ken!

And big congrats on your 20-miler!

  7. Great job on the 20!

    I just did a 22, & I think that’s the longest I’ll go for this training cycle.

  8. Great job on the 20! I’ve never gone more than 21 and most plans I see don’t recommend over 22. But go with how you are feeling.

  9. Yay for a 20 miler! It was a little warm for my liking out there, Tuesday (but I’m a warm weather weenie) so I give you credit for getting the 20 done!

I think I’d agree with everyone. I usually max out at 22…and I do think one down week in between is a good idea. My first marathon I think I ran 18, 20, 22 all in succession and I got really, really slow. Ironically, not injured, though! Nowadays I do something like 20, 14/16, 22…Just listen to your body and you’ll figure it out!

I’m hoping to do 9 this Tuesday!

  10. Great job on your 20 miler!!!!! Ice those knees!!

It’s hard for me to add more shoe reviews to your site when I wear the same pair of shoes, hahahaha!
